Homework Overview
The homework activities are described in more detail below:
Lecture - every night - reading log to be submitted as each level is completed
Every night your child will be sent home with a leveled French book to practice their reading. Please have them read aloud to a parent or older sibling. Even if you are unable to read in French, you should be able to recognize if your child is struggling with a book. If you notice that your child is having difficulty with a specific book, please indicate as such on the reading log and I will help them select a more appropriate level. Reading at home should feel “smooth” and “comfortable” for your child; if this is not the case, please let me know.
Students will be assigned a reading level, and will be given a log to track their at home reading. Please colour in circles in increments of 10, and return the form to me when it has been completed.
As a class, we will be keeping a running total of our hours of reading throughout the year and trying to meet our goal of 350 hours. As soon as a reading level is completed, please send it to school so that it can be added to our total and so that your child can be given the next level.
Mots essentiels - Two words per week - does not need to be submitted.
Each week I will assign two words that students should learn. These are words that students should be able to read independently and spell correctly in their daily writing activities. Students can practice these words in whatever way works for them.
Étude de Mots - Four activities per week - does not need to be submitted
Students will not be given specific words to study but instead a french sound to master. The goal is to have the students focus on how sounds are put together to make words and not simply memorize a few french words every week. Every week students may complete 4 tasks with the sound of the week:
1. Read the story that contains the sound
2. Create a bank of words that contain the sound and sort them by their number of syllables
3. Write a few sentences containing many of the words from their bank
4. Write the words associated with definitions
After approximately four sounds, there will be a review week where we will review all the sounds studied over the last weeks. The four activities will be slightly different during the review weeks, and I will explain these to the students when the time comes. At the end of each review week, there will be a quiz where students will be expected to apply their knowledge of the French language, the sounds practiced in class and the "mots essentiels" we have learned to this point. I will also be looking for conventions such as capitalization and punctuation, and others as the year progresses. The results of these quizzes will be included in their Writing mark.
Mathématiques - One activity per week - does not need to be submitted
The math work that will be sent home will typically be either a hands-on activity for you to complete with your child or a link to a math website. The hands-on activities will require very basic materials that can be found around the house. If you do not have the exact materials you can improvise with other things that you may have (i.e., it is not necessary to buy a deck of cards; you can simply cut a paper into squares and write the numbers 1-10). The math games are selected to reinforce the concepts learned in class. Watching your child work through the activity should give you an indication of whether they have grasped the concept.
Incomplete Work
Students who are unable to complete their work during class time will sometimes be asked to complete it at home. I understand that it is not always possible to complete the work the night it is brought home. If your child is unable to complete the work in one evening, please return it to school the next day with a note. This allows your child to work on the next steps or continue to use other pages in their notebook at school the next day. I will simply send the unfinished work home the following night for a second opportunity to complete it.
